The Most Undervalued Trait of an Accountant

The Most Undervalued Trait of an Accountant

basics podcast Jan 18, 2023

When it comes to finding the best accountant for your business, it's not just about their expertise. If the people with the most expertise can't answer every question for every scenario (news flash: nobody knows it all), they aren't going to be able to help you be your best without a little help!

Connectivity is the secret superpower we need to value in accountants and financial professionals. I have a lot of expertise in many areas but nobody can be an expert in all areas. So when I have a question, I have a community of other accountants who can help.

I think it's worth asking your accountant "how well connected are you?" or "when you have questions who do you go to?" This will help you determine if they'll truly be ready for any situation.

"If you hire a professional in any field like accounting, law, and even within your niche industry, it should be highly valued if they have an extensive network of other professionals like them."

In this episode, you will learn the following:

  1. Discover the hidden superpower of accountants that you wouldn't expect.
  2. Uncover the power of building a "Rolodex" of experts in areas you don't know.

What you'll hear in this episode:

  • How accountants have lost touch with the average person.
  • The undervalued trait of accountants.
  • Diving deeper into what you’re good at, cultivate a network of people who live and breathe what you enjoy.
  • The importance of building a rolodex.
  • The value of having multiple professionals when you sign on with someone.
  • When you hire someone in your business, you’re hiring their brain, but you also bring in their network.

Here are some brief snippets from this episode:

[00:00:49]
Accountants were hired because they had some type of unique expertise on a subject that no one really wanted to learn. But sometimes you have to trade off that level of experience with the ability to relate and talk with people. Most accountants have lost touch with the average person.

If you hire a professional in any field like accounting, law, and even within your niche industry, it should be highly valued if they have an extensive network of other professionals like them. Accountants are really behind on technology. It's worth asking your accountant, how well connected are you?

[00:09:03]
When you hire someone in your business, you're hiring their brain, their approach, but you're also bringing in their network. Ask yourself: Do you have access to experts in various areas where you're not as strong? You have to have strength in certain areas and not others.
